Garmin today introduced the Garmin nuvi navigation 1490T, a top end automotive GPS device with a large, 5-inch touch screen and slim body style that is described as “25-percent slimmer than most Garmin nuvi navigation models”. The retail price for the nuvi 1490T is $499.99 and it is believed to be available in July 2009.
An integrated traffic receiver comes standard with the nüvi 1490T and gives ad-supported, free, lifetime traffic alerts from NAVTEQ Traffic in 50 markets across North America. In addition, the nüvi 1490T has Bluetooth connectivity to place hands-free calls directly from the device.
The Garmin nuvi navigation 1490T also sports fantastic pedestrian navigation capabilities with optional CityXplorer maps. Specific city content from CityXplorer varies in cost from $9.99 to $14.99, depending on the city.
Garmin and German car accessory company carComp have yesterday announced a partnership to sell a rear view mirror that integrates a 3.5 inch display navigation system.
CCMirrorNAVI will be available from car accessory outlets in Germany at the end of April for a €299. Not a bad price for a fully loaded and fully integrated Garmin Nuvi Navigation unit to fit in any car.
I bought the Garmin Nuvi Navigation 255W a few weeks ago and find it very easy to set up and helpful for getting around generally.

It is slim enough to fit into your pocket, but I would suggest purchasing a case for protection of the Garmin nuvi navigation display screen. This wonderful Garmin nuvi navigation technology truly amazes me but it does have some limitations, some must be attributable to Garmin, others must be attributed to the map database.
A helpful addition is the on screen display that lets you know what speed limit restriction you are in, in case you missed the signs, it changes as you pass the sign post quite promptly, but the system is only as good as the feedback given from the authorities and some of the speeds displayed are incorrect. I would not however recommend you allow your Garmin nuvi navigation machine to do your thinking for you in this regard. There is no substitute for good driving practice
The Garmin nuvi navigation units instructions supplied are very basic but the help menu is good, and after a few hours of discover I found many useful features incorporated into my latest Garmin nuvi navigation gadget.
In pedestrian mode, it was sadly lacking in detail such as footpaths and for walkers this is extremely important in finding shortest routes. I can’t really blame this information is available for Garmin nuvi navigation units at extra cost in the form of city maps from CityXplorer
